Maury County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

All about a bat's habitat

What is a habitat?
Every organism requires a unique set of conditions within which it can survive and manage its food, shelter, and water. The place where an animal finds a combination of all these is called a habitat.

Roosting sites
Many male and female bats live together in colonies. Bat colonies are known as roosts. Throughout the year, these roosts keep breaking, forming and relocating due to various reasons, such as during hibernation in winter or maternity season in summer. For the sake of mating or hunting, they fly out of their roosts.

What conditions do bats need to survive?
Bats are nocturnal animals. They need a high place with a rough ceiling to be able to hang on, also a landing space that is wide enough. They like dark and warm places, so they choose a place with only a certain amount of sunlight during daytime hours. However, excessive sunlight isn't preferable by them because they only want a warm environment, not a hot one. They also look for a place with a permanent water source.

Where do bats reside?
They have varied residing sites. Some bats live in caves. They protect the bats from predators during the day. Also, the temperature in caves is quite moderate, so bats don't have to expend much energy to regulate their body temperature. Bats also live in forests. They simply hang from exposed branches. That provides them with little protection from the predators, and so in this case, they hang in larger colonies. They also dwell in places such as hollow trees or under the loose tree barks. Females usually reside in hollows for added protection from the predators as well as the extra room. Deforestation can have a massive negative impact on the population of bats. Cutting down of trees affects the habitat of trees living in forests. Due to the destruction of trees, bats also have started roosting in urban areas. Places such as houses or buildings are temperature regulated, and also provide protection. So bats utilize such places to live.

Echolocation
Bats use a kind of biological sonar to move around. During their flights, they make high-frequency calls which echo. By listening to the echo, they access the place as well as their prey. This way, they can map out their surroundings, also locate their prey. This is called echolocation. Bats are not blind; their vision is almost as good as that of humans. But the phenomenon is more effective when it comes to hunting in the dark of the night.

How does a bat adapt to its environment?
A bat's bone structure is light which reduces its weight. Also, it has claws on the tips of its wings thus enhancing its ability to cling to things such as branches or trees.
